The Dominican Republic has long been a Caribbean favorite, but 2024 marked a historic milestone: over 11 million visitors arrived by air and sea, setting a new benchmark for the nation’s thriving tourism sector.
Where Are Visitors Coming From?
According to the Ministry of Tourism, the top nationalities among foreign visitors were:
Nationality Share of Total Tourists
🇺🇸 United States 46%
🇨🇦 Canada 17%
🇨🇴 Colombia 5%
🇦🇷 Argentina 4%
🇵🇷 Puerto Rico 3%
In addition, 1.3 million Dominican nationals residing abroad returned to visit, accounting for 16.5% of total arrivals.
Residency vs. Nationality
While many travelers were born outside the U.S., a significant portion reside there. In fact, over 3.1 million visitors came from the United States, representing nearly 47% of all foreign non-resident arrivals. This underscores the country’s strong ties to the U.S. market—not just through tourism, but also through diaspora engagement.
Gateway Airports
The majority of tourists entered through:
* Punta Cana International Airport – 59%
* Las Américas (Santo Domingo) – 24%
* Cibao (Santiago) – 11%
* Puerto Plata – 5%
* La Romana – 1%
Punta Cana continues to dominate as the primary hub, thanks to its resort infrastructure and direct international connections.
Why This Matters?
This surge in tourism reflects not only the Dominican Republic’s appeal but also its strategic positioning in the Caribbean. With robust infrastructure, diverse offerings—from luxury resorts to eco-tourism—and strong diplomatic and commercial ties, the country is poised for continued growth.
For travel professionals, investors, and hospitality brands, understanding these visitor demographics is key to crafting targeted experiences and expanding market reach.
